“Serendipity in the Internet Age” is an editorial design project that compiles research on the modern digital era.
In an internet world full of information, highly customized search systems with contemporary algorithms might be depriving us of “serendipity” — the opportunity to find unexpected information that leads to new ways of thinking or transforms into useful insights.
This research, which began from a small personal curiosity, expanded into the realms of media manipulation and information science. Particularly, Eli Pariser’s concept of the “filter bubble” — where individuals are surrounded by similar information and perspectives due to content optimization — helped conceptualize my vague questions and concerns, highlighting the significant impact on society.
Inspired by Pariser’s “filter bubble” concept, I employed bubbles as the central design motif.
A bright aqua green was chosen as the primary color for its harmonious blend with the motif and its ability to create a more approachable atmosphere.
To preserve the seriousness of the issue, slab serif fonts were utilized. The cover design articulates the intangible concepts of “serendipity” and “bubbles” through the use of typography and bubble motifs.
